Konstrukcja “would rather” jest bardzo często testowanym zagadnieniem gramatycznym na poziomie B2, zarówno podczas egzaminu matury rozszerzonej jak i  egzaminu FCE i CAE. Poza tym jest bardzo przydatna, skraca i dynamizuje komunikację. “Would rather” to chciałbym, wolałbym… wybór czasu, który zastosujemy zależy od tego czy zdanie skierowane jest do teraźniejszości/ przyszłości, czy przeszłości.

TERAŹNIEJSZOŚĆ I PRZYSZŁOŚĆ:

• bez zmiany zaimka osobowego lub rzeczownika: I would rather TALK to the manager now. Stosujemy bezokolicznik
• zmiana zaimka osobowego lub rzeczownika: I would rather WE TALKED to the manager now. Stosujemy czas przeszły.

PRZESZŁOŚĆ

• bez zmiany zaimka osobowego lub rzeczownika: I would rather HAVE TALKED to the manager yesterday. Stosujemy formę Perfect.
• zmiana zaimka osobowego lub rzeczownika: I would rather WE HAD TALKED to the manager yesterday. Stosujemy formę Past Perfect.

Proszę zwrócić uwagę, że w odniesieniu do teraźniejszości/ przyszłości “would rather” tłumaczymy jako“chciałbym/ wolałbym”. Natomiast w odniesieniu do przeszłości zdanie “I would rather have talked to the manager yesterday” oznacza “Żałuję, że nie porozmawiałem z menadżerem wczoraj”.
