Advanced:

WYMOWA

Full text:

  • personality traits – cechy osobowości
  • conscientious – sumienny / skrupulatny / obowiązkowy
  • agreeable – zgodny
  • opportunity for the change – szansa na zmianę

The five OCEAN personality traits which define who we are, according to the psychologists, and which we can build on:

open to new experience

conscientious

extrovert

agreeable

neurotic / emotional

They are considered to be universal as they are present in all countries, cultures and linguistic groups. However, many psychologists these days point to ‘moving projects’ rather than ‘permanent traits’ as the former offer a lot of opportunity for the change.

  • bedrock – podstawa
  • uplifting – budujący / uskrzydlający

We can choose and shape our projects, we can’t do it with the personality traits which form a bedrock  of who we are. For example, the people who are neurotic should concentrate their efforts on the projects which they personally find uplifting. By doing so they can stay on the positive side and concentrate on the areas which bring them satisfaction and progress, both in the personal and professional lives.

  • build awareness – budować świadomość
  • undertake actions – podejmować działania
  • wellbeing – zdrowie / samopoczucie

Of course, the most positive solution is to build awareness of what our personality traits are and choose the projects according to who we are. There is a direct link between the traits, actions undertaken  and our wellbeing .

Women Doctors… the new significant facts. Medicine

Beginners:

care- opieka

The hospital offers very high standard of care to all patients.

Intermediate:

outcome- wynik / rezultat

The positive outcome of the operation surprised all the medical staff.

Advanced:

disparity- różnica/ odmienność

Disparities between the outcomes of treatment were carefully considered by the doctors.

Full text:

  • research finding – dofinansowanie badań / prac badawczych
  • rise to the rank of professor – dojść do tytułu profesora
  • disparities – różnice
  • disproportional domestic responsibilities – nierówno dzielone obowiązki domowe
  • maternity leave – urlop macierzyński
  • part-time schedules – praca w niepełnym wymiarze

Salaries for female physicians are 8% lower than male physicians. At academic hospitals, male physicians receive more research funding and are more than twice as likely as female physicians to rise to the rank of professor . These disparities  have historically been linked to the effects of disproportionate domestic responsibilities: including maternity leave and subsequent part-time schedules.

  • higher-quality medical care – wyższy standard opieki medycznej
  • review the records – przeanalizować zapisy / dane
  • re-admission – ponowna hospitalizacja
  • significantly lower- znacząco niższe

But no. Female physicians actually tend to provide higher-quality medical care ) than males, according to research released today. If male physicians were as adept as females, some 32,000 fewer Americans would die every year—among Medicare patients alone. The research is published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine. Researchers from Harvard University reviewed the records of 1,583,028 hospital  visits among Medicare patients. Within 30 days of arriving at the hospital, rates of death and re-admission were significantly lower when the patient’s doctor was female.

  • conditions of all sorts and severities – rozmaite choroby o różnym stopniu dolegliwości
  • randomly assigned – przypadkowo przypisani do …/ przydzieleni

This was true for people with medical conditions of all sorts and severities. The researchers tried to account for every variable; but ultimately all that was left was the finding that women are superior to men at treating these (65-and-older) patients in the hospital. The association held true even for patients who were randomly assigned  to a physician when they arrived. People treated by a female had a 4 percent lower risk of dying and 5 percent lower risk of being admitted to the hospital again in the following month.

  • provide preventive care – zapewnić opiekę profilaktyczną
  • psychological counseling – psychologiczne wsparcie
  • adhere to clinical guidelines – dostosować się do klinicznych zaleceń
  • lower mortality  – niższa śmiertelność
  • the best possible outcomes – najlepsze możliwe wyniki/ rezultaty
  • irrespective of … – niezależnie od …
  • make up only one-third  – stanowią jedynie 1/3
  • work force – pracownicy/ ogół zatrudnionych

To explain the discrepancy, the researchers point to past studies that have shown female physicians are more likely to provide preventive care and psychological counseling. Female doctors are also more likely to adhere to clinical guidelines . Female physicians “have a more patient- centered communication style, and have longer visits than male physicians. The next step would be to understand why female physicians have lower mortality  so that all patients can have the best possible outcomes, irrespective of the gender of their physician. Females make up only one-third of the American physician work force  .

Swearing is Good 4U :) . Business / Medicine

Beginners:

vent- uwolnić/ odreagować

We need to vent negative emotions, that’s good for our health – Musimy odreagowywać negatywne emocje, to korzystne dla naszego zdrowia.

Intermediate:

unacceptable- niedopuszczalne

Many people regard swearing as the unacceptable for of behaviour – Wiele osób uważa przeklinanie za niedopuszczalną formę zachowania.

Advanced:

facilitate- wspomagać/ wspierać

Many managers find that swearing facilitates positive emotions in their teams – Wielu menadżerów odkrywa, że przeklinanie korzystnie wpływa na pozytywne emocje w zespole.

Do you swear…? 🙂 Maybe it’s not that bad.

  • swearing facilitates – przeklinanie wspiera / wspomaga
  • profane words – wulgarne słownictwo (formalnie)
  • violent – brutalny
  • rudeness – chamstwo

Research shows the swearing facilitates  team building at work. When using powerful words (but not offensive) people tend to work more effectively and stay closer together. Bad language is not only used to vent  negative emotions, we use the profane words when we express joy and achieve success. Furthermore, swearing makes us less physically violent. The point is however, not to swear too often. If  using bad language is to become or stay efficient, we cannot swear all the time. And of course rudeness , aggression and insult should always be unacceptable (niedopuszczalne).

The Best Age for Success…? Business / Medicine

Beginners:

similar personalities- podobne osobowości

Some people think that partners who have similar personalities have a good chance to live happy.

Intermediate:

opposites attract- przeciwieństwa się przyciągają/ są atrakcyjne dla siebie

Others believe that the opposites attract.

Advanced:

reach an unexpected result- osiągnąć nieoczekiwany skutek/ wynik

By comparing and contrasting various criteria, the scientists reached an unexpected result of the experiment.

highest-impact work- najbardziej wpływowa/ wybitna praca

His highest-impact work was published across the world.

Full text:

  • consider oneself as … – uważać się za … / myśleć o sobie jako …
  • entirely successful – w pełni zrealizowany / o osobie która osiągnęła pełny sukces
  • yearn for … – pragnąć / pożądać …

It what age are you too old to achieve breakthrough success in your field? That question fascinates so many people, I suspect, because almost nobody considers themselves already entirely successful. The unpublished novelist longs to be published, the published one yearns for bestsellers, the bestselling superstar desires  the Booker prize.

  • reach an unexpected result – osiągnąć nieoczekiwany sukces
  • age isn’t much of a factor – wiek nie jest aż tak ważnym czynnikiem
  • highest-impact work – najbardziej wybitna / wpływowa praca
  • crucial – niezbędny / konieczny

But a huge new study, examining the careers of nearly 3,000 physicists from 1893 on, reaches an unexpected result. It’s not that youth wins out, nor that years of experience lead to late triumphs. Rather, age just isn’t much of a factor. A physicist’s highest-impact work “could be the first publication, mid-career, or last publication”. What counted more was productivity. If you want to publish a celebrated physics paper, the crucial thing isn’t to be young and energetic, nor old and wise. It’s to publish a lot of papers.

  • similar personalities – podobne osobowości
  • opposites attract – przeciwności przyciągają się

Something similar happens in romance: we argue if partners should have similar personalities, or whether opposites attract – when in fact, psychologists argue, neither plays a big role in predicting relationship success.

  • 0:38′ breakthrough role – przełomowa rola

The Most Comprehensive Study on Diet. Medicine

Beginners:

nutrition- odżywianie

Proper nutrition is very important to keep good health – Odpowiednie odżywianie jest bardzo ważne do utrzymania dobrego stanu zdrowia.

Intermediate:

risk factor- czynnik ryzyka

Poor diet and inactivity are the risk factors for the heart diseases – Zła dieta oraz brak aktywności fizycznej są czynnikiem ryzyka zachorowań na choroby serca.

Advanced:

life expectancy- przewidywana długość życia

Life expectancy depends on the proper diet, activity and genes – Przewidywana długość życia zależy od odpowiedniej diety, aktywności oraz genów.

Full text:

  • comprehensive study – całościowe / pełne / szerokie badanie
  • nutrition – odżywianie
  • malnutrition – nieodpowiednie odżywianie
  • decisive factor – decydujący czynnik
  • risk factor – czynnik ryzyka

NAGRANIE WYMOWY:

The Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington carried out the most comprehensive study on the nutrition  and malnutrition related diseases. The method designed by the scientists allowed them to examine millions of individuals coming from every country of the world.

The result: poor diet is the decisive factor (decydujący czynnik) in one out of every five deaths in the world. Diet is the second highest risk factor (czynnik ryzyka) of death…just after smoking.

  • life expectancy – przewidywana długość życia
  • directly linked to …  – bezpośrednio związany z …
  • subjected to … – poddany / narażony na …
  • wellbeing – dobre samopoczucie / dobry stan zdrowia

The highest life expectancy : Japan 84 years is directly linked to  the diet. Despite being subjected to  stress and overwork, the Japanese who traditionally eat well and are active…live longest lives and also maintain high comfort of wellbeing  until well into their 80s.

  • perceived as … – postrzegany jako…
  • linked to … – łączony z …
  • inactivity – brak aktywności

In most other developed countries high blood pressure, high body mass index (the most popular measure of obesity), high total cholesterol are perceived as high risk of death factors and… they are all linked to poor diet and inactivity.

  • primarily – przede wszystkim
  • occurrence – występowania
  • premature death – przedwczesna śmierć

All the aforementioned is already well known, however the study offers some contrastive conclusions, primarily: eating red meat is not a risk factor as long as you maintain active lifestyle… and failing to eat nuts and grains is much more dangerous. The studies reveal  the direct correlation between the poor diet and high occurrence of cancer, heart disease and stroke in the examined countries. 72% of premature deaths  in the world result from the developed, rather than contracted, disease… and poor diet is the decisive risk factor here. The study also proves that people are living longer but in poor health.

  • allow systems to be practised – zezwalać na praktykowanie

  • make significant contribution to … – mieć znaczący udział w …
  • oath – przysięga (uroczyście, np. administer oath – złożyć przysięgę)

WYMOWA

Many countries that trace their history to ancient civilizations allow systems of treatment to be practised today. Traditional Chinese medicine dates back to about 3,000 years ago, whereas India’s own Ayurvedic tradition stretches back more than 5,000 years. These traditional systems have made significant contributions to modern medicine. Ancient Egypt, for example, is known to have influenced the Greek physician Hippocrates of Kos—considered the father of modern Western medicine, and the person after whom the Hippocratic oath was named.

  • willow bark – kora wierzby 😉
  • active ingredient – aktywny składnik
  • effective scientifically proven drugs – leki o skuteczności potwierdzonej naukowo
  • pharmaceutical product – produkt farmaceutyczny

Ancient Egyptians used dried leaves to treat aches and pains and Hippocrates prescribed an extract of willow bark for fevers long before European scientists synthesized the active ingredient in both, salicylic acid. That helped lead to the development of one of the oldest, most effective scientifically proven drugs in human history, one that continues to be a popular pharmaceutical product today: aspirin.

  • fringe – tutaj: wybryk / kaprys
  • member states – państwa członkowskie
  • acknowledge – uznać/ przyznać / potwierdzić
  • rely on … – polegać na …
  • outline strategy – opracować strategię
  • validate – uznać/ potwierdzić wartość

And though traditional medicines have often been caricatured in the West as fringe or universally harmful, many countries—with the support of the World Health Organization—continue to use them. In a 2019 report, the WHO said that 179 countries (nearly 90 percent of its member states) acknowledged relying on traditional medicine in some form. Back in 2014, it outlined strategy to help nations validate these practices.

  • underestimate – nie doceniać / overestimate – przeceniać
  • demand for … – popyt na … / zapotrzebowanie na …

“Traditional medicine is an important and often-underestimated part of health care,” Margaret Chan, the organization’s then–director general, said at the time. “It is found in almost every country in the world and the demand for its services is increasing.”

  • define clearly – czytelnie zdefiniować
  • ensure safety – zapewnić bezpieczeństwo
  • affordable – po przystępnej cenie

The strategy  formulated clearly defined national policies that ensured safety, quality, and regulation. The WHO would help countries develop standards that validated traditional remedies while integrating them with modern medicine, seeing them as affordable, low-tech interventions in underserved areas.

  • severe shortage of … – dotkliwy brak
  • treatment facilities- infrastruktura medyczna
  • rural areas – tereny pozamiejskie
  • prescribe treatment – zalecić / przepisać metodę leczenia
  • bound together – połączone/ związane / zintegrowane

India offers an example of precisely this integration. In India homeopathy and traditional medicine have offered an antidote to the rising cost of health care and the severe shortage of treatment facilities in rural  areas. In the mid-’90s, India’s government formed a department within the health ministry to regulate traditional medicine, including homeopathy. In all, six different types of traditional medicine are institutionalized in India, and taught in more than 500 medical colleges. Nearly 800,000 traditional-medicine doctors were registered with the health ministry, compared with 1.1 million allopathic doctors. Even Indian medical professionals trained in Western-style programs will often prescribe homeopathic treatments, illustrating how bound together traditional and modern medicine can be in the country.
