The base is principally used for science and research, but will be developed and expanded to include accommodation for tourists along with improvements geared towards commercial flights.

The first direct flight linking Australia to Europe. The new Qantas flight will link Perth to London in 17 hours, making it one of the longest passenger flights in the world. The airline is aiming to make the flight as comfortable as possible for its economy passengers, including using the Dreamliner 787 for the route, an aircraft designed to decrease turbulence and improve air quality. It’s also a great opportunity for Europeans to explore Australia’s most remote city.

Your face is yours. It is a defining feature of your identity. But it’s also just another datapoint waiting to be collected. At a time when cameras are ubiquitous  and individual data collection  is a part of every transaction a person can make, faces are increasingly taken by others. Data brokers already buy and sell detailed profiles that describe who you are.

They track your public data  and your online behavior to figure out your age, your gender, your relationship status, your exact location, how much money you make, which supermarket you shop at, and on and on and on. It’s entirely reasonable  to wonder how companies are collecting and using images of you, too.

  1. Facebook already uses facial recognition software to tag (oznaczyć) individual people in photos.
  2. Apple’s new app, Clips, recognizes individuals in the videos you take.
  3. Snap’s famous selfie filters work by mapping detailed points on individual users’ faces.
  4. That’s similar to how software by the Chinese startup Face++ works. Its software maps dozens of points on a person’s face, then stores the data it collects. The idea is to be able to use facial recognition systems for no-key entry to office buildings and apartment complexes.  E
  5. xperts have been warning against facial-recognition systems for decades. The F.B.I.’s latest facial recognition tools give the agency the ability to scan millions of photos of ordinary Americans.

“Most people have no idea that this is happening,” said Alvaro Bedoya, the executive director of the Center on Privacy and Technology at Georgetown Law, in testimony at the hearing. “The latest generation of this technology will allow to scan the face of every man, woman, and child walking in front of a street  camera… Do you have the right to walk down the street without the government secretly scanning your face? Is it a good idea to give government so much power with so few limits?”

The F.B.I. insists that its use of facial recognition technology is for investigative leads only, and that a faceprint isn’t so different than  fingerprints. Facial recognition software is merely an extension of the work that law enforcement already does.

Privacy advocates and members of Congress agree that what happens to this sort of data is a complicated and urgent question. Eventually, it may be impossible for people to avoid surveillance .

“We might get to a point where you just don’t have the option to opt out,” said Alvaro Hoyos, the chief information security officer at the password and identity management firm OneLogin. “People might not want to think about or talk about it, but we’re going toward a state of constant surveillance.”

Symptoms of a Toxic Workplace. Business / Technology / Law (4 Registered Users)

Not sure? Here are six sure ways of knowing if your workplace is undeniably toxic.

Your manager is a control freak

  • overbearing – nie do zniesienia/ przybijająca/ przygniatająca
  • distrust – nie ufać
  • there is no room for group discussion – nie ma miejsca na dyskusję w grupie
  • take orders – przyjmować polecenia
  • report back – zdawać relację

 

This person micromanages to the last detail. The situation is overbearing, because he or she wants control over decisions. He or she distrusts the team and doesn’t delegate; there’s no room for group discussion or input because the leadership style is autocratic. In turn, creativity or learning something new is absent under this dictatorship. The motto is: Just take your orders and report back.

People play the blame game

At such a company, you’ll find colleagues lacking in personal accountability and throwing blame grenades at each other. If this is your company and you’re caught in the middle of a minefield, your best option (short of quitting) for conflict management is to rise above it: point out the specific behavior in question, don’t personalize the issue (be objective), communicate assertively and state the facts, and document everything that goes on.

You can’t trust anybody

In a volatile culture of distrust where people form alliances and managers pit employees against one another, it’s not safe to disclose information or work in close collaboration. Job survival in this tense competitive environment is day to day, owing to the unpredictability of the place. Trusting your peers is risky: they may really be your enemies. Trusting your manager is just corporate suicide.

Gossip

You know who they are: most likely disgruntled workers who didn’t get something their way, disagreed with a change of direction and are now holding grudges, or didn’t get that promotion they felt entitled to. They are quick to gossip. Keep a close eye on them. They spread gossip and enlist others into their negative campaign. They are also sure to befriend those innocent new hires to vilify someone or something.

Watch out for two-faced colleagues

Ever seen colleagues who kiss up to management to win favors, usually at your expense? You know them well: they’ll go out of their way to befriend and manipulate management in order to negotiate preferential treatment. Things like undue pay raises, training, extra time off, or special perks that nobody else knows about or gets. Keep an eye out for colleagues that spend way more face time with their managers than usual.

People are treated like numbers

From a senior management perspective, employees are viewed as worker bees and considered to be objects or expenses rather than assets; there is little concern for their happiness or well-being. After all, the motive for hiring them was purely for productivity and profit. There’s little evidence of leaders’ compassion and empathy in seeing employees as valued human beings. As a result, you’ll encounter high levels of stress, turnover, absenteeism, and burnout.
