  • enormous popularity among teenagers – ogromna popularność wśród nastolatków

It is very probable that the e-Sports will be added to the official medal programme when the Olympic Games come to Paris in 2024. The Olympic Committee decided to take a close look  and consider the inclusion of the competitive eSports due to the enormous popularity among teenagers.

  • which games will be contested – jakie zawody zostaną rozegrane
  • invoke – wywołują / wymagają
  • priority – priorytet
  • amount to … – wynosić … / opiewać na kwotę …
  • prize pools – sumy nagród

As for now the Committee agreed to include the eSports in the programme for the Asian Sport Games in 2022, the world largest multi-sport games after the Olympic Games. It has not been decided yet which games will be contested . The Committee is debating if the eSports invoke  the sufficient amount of physical activity to be considered as sport. On the other hand, both passive and active involvement of the young people in the Olympic Games is the priority  of the Committee for the coming years. The revenue generated by the eSports in 2015 amounts to 493 million US dollars. Competitive gaming attracts tens of thousands of spectators to the arenas (40 000 in Seoul recently) and millions online, some prize pools reach the amount of 24 million US dollars.

  • lead to the loss of investments – prowadzić do utraty inwestycji

According to Steven Maijor,  chair of the European Securities and Markets Authority buying coin offerings can lead to the loss of investments.

“You don’t have the regular protection that regulated investments offer, and can lose all of your investments.”

  • bear similarities to … – być podobnym do … (formalnie)
  • differ widely – znacząco się różnić
  • acquire rights – nabywać prawa
  • important factors – ważne czynniki
  • consider – rozważać

Initial Cryptocurrencies Offerings  bear similarities to initial public offerings for a stock, but in an IPO, the investor usually has a stake in the company, whereas coin sales differ widely in terms of acquired rights. That’s been a primary criticism of ICOs, but differences in regulation are also important factors for investors to consider.

“As a European securities market authority, we have warned, in November, about the so-called ICOs because while ICOs in principle can give you services in return for the coin that you buy, or a share in the revenue, this happens in a very unregulated space.”

  • make effort – starać się/ wykonywać wysiłek …
  • consolidate position – konsolidować/ umacniać stanowisko, pozycję

Being determined, hard-working and talented may not be enough if you are competing with some of the world’s most powerful companies. That’s the lesson many start-ups have to learn recently as they face the competition from the tech giants which are making effort to consolidate their dominating position.

  • contrary to the common belief – wbrew powszechnemu przekonaniu
  • at 30 year low – najniższa wartość od 30 lat

Contrary to the common belief  the establishment of the new companies rate is at 30 year low and many investors, entrepreneurs  and analysis’s think that big tech is to blame.

  • increasingly difficult – coraz trudniejsze
  • at the scale – w skali/ w tempie
  • skyrocketing – basso wysokie i dynamicznie nadal rosnące
  • start something on one’s own – zacząć / założyć coś własnego

Start-ups have been driving job and talent creation and innovation but they find it increasingly  difficult to attract investment as one day… they may have to compete with the giants like Google or Facebook.  Also, the giants are financing the next generation of research at the scale that nobody else can afford… Furthermore, as the salaries are skyrocketing and working conditions are excellent, there is less initiative to leave the company and start something on one’s own.

  • pose a great opportunity – stanowić wielką szansę
  • attract investors – przyciągać inwestorów
  • funding – inwestycje / fundusze

On the other hand, the existence of fewer start-up may pose a great opportunity  for the bravest and most innovative ones. Determination may actually attract investors and more funding.

No to Smog… Italy/ China Green Cities Project. Technology/ Business

Beginners:

vertical- pionowy

Vertical green areas are becoming popular all around the world but not in Poland.

Intermediate:

equivalent- odpowiednik

The equivalent buildings of the Milan green skyscraper will be built in China.

Advanced:

unveil plans: odkryć/ ujawnić plany

The Italian architect unveiled plans to build green cities in China.

Full text:

  • from top to toe – od stóp do głów/ na całej wysokości
  • choke – dławić się/ krztusić się
  • tree-clad – pokryty drzewami
  • vertical – pionowy (horizontal – poziomy)
  • unveil plans – ujawnić/ odkryć plany

When Stefano Boeri imagines the future of urban China he sees green, and lots of it. Office blocks, homes and hotels  from top to toe in plant life; a breath of fresh air for metropolises that are choking on fumes and dust. Last week, the Italian architect, famous for his tree-clad  Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest) skyscraper complex in Milan, unveiled plans  for a similar project in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing.

  • equivalent – odpowiednik
  • compose of … – składać się z …
  • under construction – w budowie

The Chinese equivalent – Boeri’s first in Asia – will be composed of two neighbouring towers with 23 species of tree. The structures will reportedly house offices, a 247-room luxury hotel, a museum and even a green architecture school, and are currently under construction, set for completion next year.

  • infamous for … – mający złą sławę z powodu …
  • entire city – całe miasto

But Boeri now has even braver plans for China: to create entire “forest cities” in a country that has become infamous for  environmental degradation and smog.

“We have been asked to design an entire city where you don’t only have one tall building but you have 100 or 200 buildings of different sizes, all with trees and plants on the facades. We are working very seriously on designing all the different buildings. I think they will start to build at the end of this year. Ee could imagine having the first forest city in China.”

  • oxygen – tlen
  • contribution – udział/ przyczynienie się do …
  • absorb dust produced by urban traffic – pochłaniać pył emitowany przez ruch miejski

“It is positive because the presence of such a large number of plants, trees is contributing to the cleaning of the air, contributing to absorbing CO2 and producing oxygen (tlen). And what is so important is that this large presence of plants is an amazing contribution in terms of absorbing the dust produced by urban traffic.”

The architect said believed Chinese officials were finally understanding that they needed to embrace a new, more sustainable model of urban planning that involved not “huge megalopolises” but settlements of 100,000 people or fewer that were entirely constructed of “green architecture”. “What they have done until now is simply to continue to add new suburbs  to their cities,” he said. They have to imagine a new model of city that isa system of small, green cities.”

  • replicate – odtwarzać / kopiować

“We think – and we hope – that this idea of vertical  forests can be replicated (odtwarzane/ kopiowane) everywhere. I absolutely have no problem if there are people who are copying or replicating. I hope that what we have done can be useful for other kinds of experiments.”

The Best 5 Branches to Invest in :). Business / Law / Technology

Here are the best five industries to invest in 🙂

Financial technology (fintech)

  • disrupt – zakłócać
  • spectacular growth – spektakularny wzrost
  • go mainstream – zająć główną pozycję na rynku/ znaleźć się w centrum uwagi
  • bundle with other services – łączyć z innymi usługami
  • apartment rental – wynajem mieszkań
  • sharp increase – gwałtowny wzrost
  • broker – agent/ pośrednik

SŁUCHAJCIE/ CZYTAJCIE/ POWTARZAJCIE:

Financial technology looks very attractive, as start-ups continue to disrupt the financial sector.  And this spectacular growth looks set to continue. A report published by Envision Intelligence found that the fintech sector will enjoy an incredible CAGR of 74.16 percent from 2019 to 2025.

One specific fintech area that is expected to take off  is “insuretech”—that’s technology that is helping to optimise the various aspects of the insurance industry. Speaking recently to Forbes, Victoria Treyger, managing director at Felicis Ventures, believes that insuretech will soon go mainstream. “We will see changes in how ‘insurance’ is sold where it becomes bundled with other  services, especially apartment rentals and home sales.… Businesses will see a sharp increase in all types of commercial insurance that they can buy directly online rather than through brokers.”

Cybersecurity

  • shift into online world – przenieść się do świata online
  • violate privacy – pogwałcić prywatność
  • data breaches – przestępstwa przeciwko danym
  • burden – obciążyć
  • pay substantial amounts – płacić znaczące kwoty
  • settlement – ugoda
  • lawsuit – sprawa sądowa
  • revenue – przychód
  • malware- złośliwe oprogramowanie
  • phishing data – wykradanie/ wyłudzanie danych
  • take customer data protection very seriously – podchodzić bardzo poważnie do zagadnienia ochrony danych klienta
  • mandatory- obowiązkowy
  • virtually every industry – praktycznie każda branża
  • take off massively- gwałtownie się rozwijać

SŁUCHAJCIE/ CZYTAJCIE/ POWTARZAJCIE:

As our lives shift further into the online world, the potential for criminals to violate our privacy becomes ever greater. And the responsibility for such data breaches will burden  company whose site has been hacked, whether that be an e-commerce retailer, a health insurer or a social-media company. Not only will such companies have to pay substantial amounts in settlements of customer lawsuits for such criminal activity, they also stand to lose future revenue from the loss of confidence experienced by affected customers.

The threat itself is being executed in increasingly diverse forms, moreover. Viruses, spam, malware, identity fraud, hacking, phishing data and cyberstalking are just some of the ways in which companies are now being attacked. Given that companies are having to take customer-data protection very seriously, therefore, cybersecurity is now being considered as mandatory in virtually every industry.

As a result, most analyses views cybersecurity taking off massively over the next few years.

Cannabis

  • momentous day – przełomowy dzień
  • for recreational purposes – dla celów własnych (w kontekście narkotyków)
  • strong investment potential – mocny potencjał inwestycyjny

SŁUCHAJCIE/ CZYTAJCIE/ POWTARZAJCIE:

October 17, 2018, was a momentous day in Canada when, following June’s Senate vote to legalise recreational use of cannabis, the country’s adult citizens were officially able to buy the controversial plant for recreational purposes. Investors can now expect to see strong gains in this new industry.

And with more states in the US potentially legalizing recreational cannabis use during the coming years, both North American countries represent strong investment potential over the next few years.

Robotics

  • vastly expanding industry – błyskawicznie/ intensywnie rozwijając a się branża
  • design, manufacturing and application – projektowanie, produkcja i zastosowanie
  • completely transform global economy – zupełnie zmienić światową gospodarkę
  • drive growth – napędzać … / być motorem wzrostu
  • boost demand for  … – zwiększyć / zintensyfikować popyt na …
  • account for … – stanowić/ odpowiadać za …

SŁUCHAJCIE/ CZYTAJCIE/ POWTARZAJCIE:

This vastly expanding industry is concerned with the technology focused on the design, manufacturing and application of robots—that is, devices that can perform tasks without the need for human assistance.

And many now believe that the age of robots will soon be upon us. Indeed, the robot revolution is expected by some to completely transform the global economy over the next couple of decades.  Perhaps unsurprisingly, the need for automation across a vast number of industries will drive this growth, with the report particularly highlighting the rise of smart factory systems as already being crucial in boosting demand for robots.

The automotive industry is expected to account for the biggest market share for robotics.

Artificial intelligence (AI)

  • we are undoubtedly witnessing a sharp rise – niewątpliwie jesteśmy świadkami błyskawicznego wzrostu
  • introduce successful AI applications –  wprowadzać z powodzeniem zastosowanie sztucznej inteligencji
  • autonomous cars – samochody autonomiczne
  • accelerate – przyspieszać
  • gross domestic product (GDP) –  produkt krajowy brutto
  • sensible long-term decision – rozsądna decyzja (inwestycyjna) długoterminowa

SŁUCHAJCIE/ CZYTAJCIE/ POWTARZAJCIE:

Although we’ve not quite yet reached the phase of the machines taking over the world, we are undoubtedly witnessing a sharp rise in the number of successful AI applications being introduced as well as the amounts being spent on research in this field.  Promising applications of the technology include autonomous cars, healthcare and financial services, not to mention its controversial use for military purposes.

The  adoption of the technology is now beginning to accelerate—although the industry is admittedly still in a very early stage of development. And PricewaterhouseCoopers predicts that AI will represent up to $15.7 trillion of global gross domestic product by 2030. As such, investing in AI now represents a sensible long-term decision.

The Right to Privacy/ The Right to be Forgotten. Law/ Technology

  • at the heart of …- w centrum uwagi
  • convicted of offences- skazany za przestępstwa
  • criminal background- przestępcza przeszłość
  • take down links to the articles- usunąć linki do artykułów
  • relevant- właściwy/ odpowiedni/ aktualny
  • go up against rehabilitation- być/ pozostawać w sprzeczności z zasadami resocjalizacji/ powrotu do społeczeństwa

At the heart of the first high court ruling on the ‘right to be forgotten’ principle in England and Wales   is a battle between the right to privacy and the right to know. The cases focus on two businessmen, convicted of offences more than a decade ago, whose criminal backgrounds are the subject of articles online. They wanted Google to take down links to those articles over what was essentially an issue of privacy. They argued that the information within the stories is no longer relevant, causes distress and goes up against the principles of rehabilitation laws.

  • remove access to important information- odmówić dostępu do ważnej/ istotne informacji
  • inherent tension- naturalny/ oczywisty konflikt/ sprzeczność

Google is arguing over the issue of the public’s right to know. It says the men are attempting to rewrite history and remove access to important information about their offending. Ben Rose, co-founder and partner at Hickman & Rose, sums it up: “There is an inherent tension between an individual’s right to privacy and what information the public interest requires to be available”.

  • specified recently- określił/ orzekł ostatnio
  • right to privacy- prawo do prywatności
  • protection of personal data- ochrona danych osobowych
  • outrank- przewyższać

The European Court of Justice specified recently that search engines operating in Europe must find a balance between offering information in the public interest and protecting people’s rights to privacy and protection of personal data. The ruling suggests links should be taken down when the information or articles to which they lead appears “inadequate, irrelevant or no longer relevant”. In a key paragraph of the ruling, it effectively states that privacy outranks “the economic rights of the operator of the search engine, but also the interest of the general public in finding that information upon a search relating to the data subject’s name”.

  • disproportionately impact a person- mieć nieodpowiedni/ nieproporcjonalny wpływ na życie osoby

Jim Killock, executive director of the Open Rights Group, said:

“The right to be forgotten is meant to apply to information that is no longer relevant but disproportionately impacts a person. Spent convictions are rather different. The people’s right to rehabilitation is an important one.”

China’s Growing Ambitions for Space. Technology / Business

Beginners:

output- wynik/ rezultat

The output is very positive, we need to use it.

Intermediate:

ambiguity- dwuznaczność/ wątpliwość

There is no ambiguity that China wants to become the leader in the space race.

Advanced:

meet the target- zrealizować cel

The sales target this year will be very difficult to meet, both by the whole team and individual employees.

Full article:

  • address – tutaj: mowa/ przemowa
  • outline – przedstawić plan/ ogólne informacje
  • make progress – czynić/ robić postępy
  • ambiguity – dwuznaczność / wątpliwość

In his address 4 years ago, President Donald Trump said that the United States stands “ready to unlock the mysteries of space,” but he still has to outline his space conquest policy, it may still be months during the second campaign before the country learns what that means. Meanwhile, China is making progress with its own space efforts, and with no ambiguity about its mission.

  • conduct – przeprowadzić / zrealizować
  • launch – start
  • meet the target – osiągnąć cel
  • output – wynik / rezultat

The country recently announced it would conduct about 30 launches this year. The target, if met , would be a record for China. The country conducted 21 successful orbital-launch missions in 2018, and 19 the year before that. The output puts China in a close second behind the United States, which saw 22 successful launches, and ahead of Russia, which conducted 16.

  • accomplish successfully – realizować / osiągnąć / zakończyć z sukcesem

And there’s plenty more to come, according to a recent report from the China National Space Administration (CNSA), a  document that includes the country’s space goals for the next five years. The report said CNSA will launch  cargo spacecraft to the space laboratory. And in 2020, it plans to land a rover on Mars, attempted by Russia and other European nations, but only to be successfully accomplished by the United States.

This would be a revolutionary step, which would take the methods of security from the company premisesencryption, anti-virus software, firewalls, intrusion-detection systems … to the outside world: primarily the world that attacks them by, for example, crashing the servers of the intruders. The retaliation solution is advocated by many independent think tanks and lawyers who professionally deal with the problem and criticize the anti-hacking regulations for being too restrictive for the targets of attack rather than intruders. There are some lawyers who even believe that there should be regulations which allow the public bodies and companies working together to infiltrate external networks in the name of self-defense.

Pilotless Planes Next Decade…? Business/ Aviation/ Technology

  • slash fares – znacząco obniżyć ceny biletów/ opłat
  • prices drop by over 10 per cent – ceny spadną o ponad 10 procent
  • remove potential for pilot error – usunąć możliwość popełnienia błędu przez pilota

Passenger planes could be flown without a pilot in the next decade, according to a new study conducted by the investment banks.  Pilotless planes could save airlines £27 billion and slash fares for passengers, who could see prices drop by over 10 per cent.  The study predicts flights will be safer as the potential for pilot error will be removed.

  • remote controlled plane – zdalnie sterowany/ kontrolowany samolot
  • refuse to fly – odmówić lotu
  • two pilot set-up – zespół dwóch pilotów

Air passengers, however, seem nervous about travelling in a remote controlled plane. More than half of the 8,000 people asked  by the investment bank UBS (54 per cent) said they would refuse to fly in a plane with no pilot, even if the flight cost less. Respondents between 18 and 34 and those who had a university degree were more willing to fly without a pilot.  UBS suggested that initially the traditional two pilot set-up will be reduced to one pilot on board and one pilot on the ground.

  • adopt technology to control aircraft – wykorzystać technologię do kierowania/ kontrolowania samolotu
  • basic building blocks of the technology – podstawowe “klocki” technologiczne

The basic technology to fly planes without pilots already exists. Military drones are operated remotely and the study says this technology could be adapted to control commercial aircraft. Boeing is set to test pilotless planes next year and the company’s vice president of product development, Mike Sinnett, said:

The basic building blocks of the technologyclearly are available.”

  • convinced – przekonany
  • we have concerns – mamy watpliwości/ obawiamy się

However, not everyone is so convinced by these technological developments. Steve Landells, BALPA flight safety specialist and former pilot, said:

We have concerns that in the excitement of this futuristic idea, some may be forgetting the reality of pilotless air travel. Automation in the cockpit is not a new thing – it already supports operations. However, every single day pilots have to intervene when the automatics don’t do what they’re supposed to”.

  • a human is still required to operate it – człowiek wciąż musi kierować/ obsługiwać/ nadzorować
  • it requires direct contact with the situation – wymaga to bezpośredniego kontaktu z sytuacją
  • diminished responsibility – obniżony poziom odpowiedzialności
  • diminished decision-making – obniżona możliwość podejmowania decyzji

“Computers can fail, and often do, and someone is still going to be needed to work that computer. Most of us own some sort of electronic device that can do amazing things – however, a human is still required to operate it. Pilot intervention will always be necessary, and because that requires direct contact with the situation, we don’t believe ‘pilotless flight’ will ever be a reality – what is more likely to happen is that the pilots are moved to the ground rather than being on board. We would question the safety of this, due to diminished responsibility and operational decision-making.”

  • 0:21′ the first step to the unmanned passenger planes – pierwszy krok w stronę bezzałogowych samolotów pasażerskich
