It was actually thought that after exciting news about the launch (wprowadzenie/ uruchomienie/wystrzelenie) of supersonic (naddźwiękowy) intercontinental passenger airplane which will follow the footsteps of the legendary Concorde, a long time would pass before anybody could beat it. But Elon Musk and SpaceX have just announced the vision of the passengers boarding the rocket (!) offshore (na morzu/ poza lądem) the east coast of the United States and being safely taken to the destination…i.e. Shanghai… This is the SpaceX long-term plan (długoterminowy plan) presented last week in Australia. The rocket-based transportation system will connect major cities around the globe in approximately (mniej więcej/ około) 30 minutes as the rockets’ route will run through the outer layers of the atmosphere. Of course there is a number of issues to confront (zagadnienia/ problemy z którymi trzeba się zmierzyć): weightlessness (nieważkość), intense gravitational forces. The maximum speed of 16 700 miles per hour is a challenge by itself (już samo w sobie jest wyzwaniem). The supersonic transportation experts claim however that the journey would be very uncomfortable to the passengers subjected to (poddany …) 2 or 3 G Forces which actually means 2 or 3 times body weight. Well, not everybody can take it. There are also other body sensations which most of us wouldn’t be able to bear… like motion sickness when even a short look outside the window screens could cause severe headaches and sickness. The economy factor is questionable (wątpliwy) as well… Concorde used three times more fuel than Boeing 747 …so how much a 100-meter-long rocket would consume…? The fact that we use rockets to transport the crew and supplies (dostawy) to the space stations is due to the fact that we have no other options available. Also, the flight may be quick…but what about the transportation of the passengers to the launch site and to the land respectively (odpowiednio). All of these could take hours. Overall,  it seems that Concorde project seems much more realistic.

An Air France A380 superjumbo jetliner taking more than 500 people from Paris to Los Angeles made an emergency landing in Canada on Saturday following “serious damage” to (znaczne/ istotne uszkodzenie…) one of its four engines, the airline said. “Flight 066 landed without further damage at the Goose Bay military airport in Canada and all of the 520 people on board were evacuated with no injuries” (ewakuowani bez uszczerbku na zdrowiu), an Air France spokesman in Paris said.

The Airbus double-decker, wide body aircraft was rerouted (przekierowany/ przewektorowany) as it passed over Greenland, landing in Goose Bay in eastern Canada. The landing went off with no problems for the jetliner carrying 496 passengers and 24 crew members. The airline was exploring options (bada możliwości/ szuka możliwych rozwiązań) to get the passengers to the US.

Video and photo images posted on social media by passengers or their relatives, showed extensive damage to (pokazały rozległe zniszczenia) the front of the outer starboard engine, with part of its external cowling stripped away (zerwana część zewnętrznej pokrywy silnika).

The cause of the problem is unknown (przyczyna problemu jest nieznana), with one of the plane’s passengers suggesting that a bird might have collided with the engine which was damaged. The passenger, Miguel Amador, posted online brief video footage apparently filmed from a window of the plane showing the damaged engine. “Engine failure halfway over the Atlantic ocean … birdstrike possibility,” he wrote. A fellow passenger, Iskandar, tweeted that the AF66 passengers “have a memory of their flight which will last a long time”.

Air France operates 10 Airbus A380s, which are the largest passenger planes in the world.

The heavily armed (ostro/ mocno uzbrojony) Australian security personnel boarded the Malaysia Airlines  plane when the passenger tried to intrude the cockpit and threaten the safety (wtargnąć do kokpitu i zagrozić bezpieczeństwu) of flight. The airplane was scheduled (zaplanowany)  to fly to Kuala Lumpur but was forced to return to Melbourne. The intruder turned out to be a 25 year old citizen of Sri Lanka who was released from (zwolniony z …)  the psychiatric hospital a week before the incident. He suddenly  stood up and ran towards the cockpit shouting that he has some explosive (materiał wybuchowy) . He was immediately wrestled down (powalony) by the crew and the passengers who  provided the assistance (zapewnić pomoc). The Malaysia Airlines press officer underlines (rzecznik prasowy podkreśla…)  that at no point (and przez chwilę) the aircraft was hijacked (porwany).  In Melbourne the passenger was escorted off (wyprowadzony) the airplane by the heavily armed personnel. The man who has been studying in Australia on a student visa will appear in court on charges related to endangering a plane or making a false threat (zarzuty sprowadzenia niebezpieczeństwa na samolot lub przedstawienia fałszywych gróźb). Such charges carry a maximum penalty (są obciążone maksymalną karą)  of 10 years in prison. The government of the state of Victoria offered to the passengers all support needed.

All newspaper and tv headlines today provide wonderful news both for the entrepreneurs and employees! According to the confirmed data the US economy has been growing even stronger and at the faster pace than in the previous quarters. The Irish economy very clearly returns to the pre-crisis Celtic Tiger levels. Spain is back to its pre-crisis growth. The European major markets are  flourishing today due to the higher corporate (i.e. Siemens and Deutsche Bank) revenue as in the second quarter. According to many experts it is the consumers who power the economy with their confidence and…spending money. Housing markets, export benefited from that as well as the increased government spendings. And India preperation for take-off compensates Chinese problems. It is likely to overcome China in inovative technologies in 4 years!

We are witnessing the discussion  in Poland on whether to raise the minimum wage and increase the burdens for the employers… I’s good to read the experience of others and listen to the experts… In Great Britain the retailers and service providers cut a large amounts of jobs and raised the prices to compensate for the rising employment costs. Most affected (dotknięci)   are food processing industry and shops, hotels and restaurants, bars. Just to prove the scale of the problem, the labour costs of Tesco, the biggest UK retailer are 4.5 billion pounds, so every 1% increase of the labour costs amounts to (wynosi) … 45 million pounds a year. Another option for the employers will be reducing many benefits the workers enjoy: staff discounts, pension fees, etc. Also, the employers will seek (poszukiwać, dążyć do) higher efficiency and productivity from the employees, which will mean… more pressure on them.
