Doctors have been told to stop routinely giving out antibiotics for common coughs, in an attempt (mając na celu, zmierzając do, aby) to save the NHS millions of pounds. The over-prescription of antibiotics has been linked to the rise of drug-resistant (odporne na działanie leków) superbugs. Around 38m prescriptions for antibiotics were written by GPs in the UK last year, costing the NHS £175m. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) had advised (także: zalecić) doctors in England and Wales not to prescribe antibiotics straight away for respiratory infections in children and adults.

  • eiyhold (witheld – withheld) – wstrzymać

A quarter of people in England and Wales visit their GP each year because of symptoms of a respiratory tract infection, such as ear infections, sore throats, coughs and colds. They account for 60%  of all antibiotic prescribing in general practice. But evidence shows that antibiotics have limited effectiveness in treating most respiratory tract infections, and complications are rare if antibiotics are withheld . The Nice guidance advise doctors to tell patients suffering from respiratory infections that they do not need antibiotics, or to offer them a delayed prescription.

  • kidney – nerka
  • liver – wątroba
  • ailment – schorzenie / dolegliwość
  • diabetes – cukrzyca

Patients should be reassured that antibiotics will “make little difference to symptoms and may have side-effects”, it states. The guidelines say doctors may wish to prescribe antibiotics immediately for children younger than two, or patients showing evidence of complications or pre-existing conditions that could make things worse, including heart, lung, kidney  or liver disease. Patients older than 65 with a cough and other ailments such as diabetes  or heart failure, or those over 80 with a cough and another ailment or previous problems, should also get the drugs.

10 Exercises to Make Your Willpower Strong! Business / Medicine/ Fitness (4 Registered Users)

10 minutes of meditation

  • willpower workout – ćwiczenie na siłę woli
  • resist – opierać się / nie zgadzać się / walczyć z …

Meditation will give you the fastest results of all of the willpower workouts listed. By meditating  you are training the brain to focus and resist. Research shows that after just 2-3 days of practising meditation for 10 minutes, your brain will be able to focus better, you will have more energy, and you will be less stressed.

Work on your posture

  • posture – postawa
  • slouch – garbić się
  • rep (repetition) – powtórzenie

When testing if willpower could be strengthened, researchers asked a group of participants to work on their posture for a 2-week period. Every time they caught themselves slouching, they were to correct themselves by sitting up straight.  To get started, simply correct your posture every time you catch yourself slouching at work or at home. It sounds extremely simple, but it takes willpower to sit up straight. Every time you do, you’re essentially doing “one rep” with your willpower muscle.

Keep a food diary

  • keep track of … – śledzić / zapisywać / notować
  • benefit – korzyść
  • increase ability – zwiększyć możliwości / umiejętności
  • resist temptations – opierać się pokusom

The same study also found that those who kept a food diary improved their willpower. Most of us don’t log all of the food we eat, so it takes willpower to keep track of it all. Any similar logging of information will also work, but I recommend a food diary because of all of its benefits. Just keep the diary for 2 weeks, and it will increase your ability to resist temptations!

Use your opposite hand

  • conduct studies – prowadzić badania
  • wired – tutaj: zaprogramowany
  • chunk of the day – okres / pora / fragment dnia
  • aim for … – zmierzać do … / mieć ambicję na / do …

Using the same methodology as with posture, researchers conducted further studies that tested other corrective actions. One that worked particularly well was to use your opposite hand. Your brain is wired to use your dominant hand, so it takes willpower to use the opposite.  To get started, select a chunk of the day to use your opposite hand. It doesn’t need to be any more than an hour in order to get results. And from personal experience, if you aim for  more than an hour, you will unnecessarily tire out your willpower muscle.

Correct your speech

  • urge to … – pragnienie / chęć
  • swear words – przekleństwa
  • consciously – świadomie
  • contractions- formy skrócone

Another test that the researchers conducted was to change subjects’ natural speech. This includes resisting the urge to use swear words, or to say “hello” instead of “hey”. Again, it takes willpower to consciously go against your instincts. It doesn’t matter how you correct your speech, as long as you change your natural speech habits.  To get started, select a chunk of the day to practise and choose the words you will change, i.e. stop using contractions:“do not” instead of “don’t”, etc.  during work hours and it worked very well. Like all exercises listed above, doing this for just 2 weeks can vastly improve your willpower!

Create and meet deadlines

  • pick a task – wybrać ćwiczenie / zadanie
  • put off – odkładać na później / opóźniać
  • set a deadline – ustalić ostateczny termin wykonania
  • accomplish – osiągnąć / zrealizować
  • adhere to … – dostosować się do … / dotrzymać …
  • cut back on … – ograniczyć …

Creating self-imposed deadlines you can work your willpower in the same way. To get started, simply pick a task on your to-do list that you may have been putting off. Set a deadline to accomplish it, and make sure you adhere to it. The participants who followed this process for 2 weeks not only got their old to-dos done, but also improved their diets, exercised more, and cut back on cigarettes and alcohol.

Keep track on your spendings

  • spendings – wydatki
  • researcher – naukowiec
  • keep track of … – być świadomym / zapisywać, etc.

In the same way most of us don’t track the food that we eat, many of us don’t track our spending either. Even if you don’t cut back on spending – which would also be a willpower workout – researchers found that simply keeping track of of where your money went will improve your willpower.

Deal with temptations

  • deal with … – radzić sobie z …
  • resist a craving – oprzeć się zachciance / pokusie
  • tempting – kuszący
  • consistent – nieustanny / konsekwentny / spójny

Resisting a craving will be hard. Carry something small but tempting with you. It doesn’t need to be for an entire day, but for long enough that you will be truly tempted. By consistently saying “no”, you will increase your ability to resist other temptations.

Be careful about automatic decisions

  • mindful – świadomy / ostrożny
  • make / take daily decisions – podejmować codzienne decyzje

A final exercise is to simply be more mindful of your decisions throughout the day. We are often so lost in thought, that our actions become automatic. Taking time to think about why you are making your daily decisions will increase your ability to focus and resist temptations.

  • significantly negative implications on … – znacząco negatywne konsekwencje dla …
  • career opportunities – możliwości / szanse kariery
  • prove oneself from scratch – udowadniać przydatność / zdolności / wykształcenie

According to the study of the London Law Firm Slater&Gordon 60% of the women who answered questions in the opinion poll  believe that pregnancy had significantly negative implications on their career opportunities .  Most women claim that they had to prove themselves from scratch  once they decided to return to work.

  • maternity – tutaj: urlop macierzyński
  • code of conduct – zasady postępowania
  • advocate … – opowiadać się za … / wspierać …
  • irrespective of … – niezależnie od …

It is also clearly marked that voluntary shortening of the maternitywas appreciated at the companies.  Even though the code of conduct of the companies advocate openness to employees irrespective of  their gender, the practice shows that women in their 20s and 30s can be frequently overlooked in favour of men when it comes to hiring and promotion opportunities.

  • injustice – niesprawiedliwość
  • confidence in … – zaufanie do …
  • previously occupied position – uprzednio zajmowane stanowisko
  • elligible to … – uprawnione do …

Apart from obvious injustice it carries some long-term psychological consequences decreasing the confidence in employers. In Great Britain women are elligible to 52 weeks of statutory maternity leave with the 90% of their average  payments. Return to the previously occupied position is guaranteed by the law.

Ripe fruit have been the source of sugar for us since the inception of humanity Od początku ludzkości dojrzałe owoce są dla nas źródłem cukru.

Full text:

  • addictive – uzależniający
  • since the inception of humanity – od powstania / od początku ludzkości
  • ripe fruit – dojrzałe owoce
  • universally available – ogólnie dostępny

Science claims sugar is as addictive  as narcotics or nicotine. Sugar becomes the substance of first choice for the laboratory rats during the experiments. Sugar has given us the high since the inception of humanity … in the form of honey and ripe fruit. And now when sugar is so universally available  in the whole range of products- we are hooked.

  • excessive consumption – przesadne / zbyt duże / niebezpiecznie wysokie spożycie
  • obesity – otyłość
  • promote development of diabetes – przyczyniać się do … / wspierać rozwój cukrzycy
  • raise blood pressure – podnosić ciśnienie krwi
  • fatten liver – otłuszczać wątrobę

The excessive consumption  of sugar results in obesity, promotes the development of diabetes, raises blood pressure  and fattens liver. The problem is that in case of sugar consumption our body will not tell us ‘enough’… contrary to high doses of salt consumed. Giving up may be as hard as resigning from other addictive substances: attention deficit, depression, etc. Advanced science hopes there is the answer in genetics… as we respond to sugar differently.

  • develop addiction to … – uzależniać się od …
  • on a daily basis – na co dzień / stale
  • display addiction symptoms – przejawiać symptomy uzależnienia
  • fall prey to addictions – padać ofiarą uzależnienia
  • so far, so good, so what – no dobrze, i co dalej

There some people who never develop addiction even if they are exposed to sugar on a daily basis . That’s also true with other addictive substances… there are individuals who drink a glass of wine daily for decades and don’t display addiction symptoms while other people fall prey to addiction  just after a couple of weeks of excessive drinking. So far, so good, so what:) ?

  • Giving up your favorite tiramisu, creme brûlée or a bar of chocolate…?

The French fashion and beauty companies pledge not to use  the underage and underweight models in the advertising campaigns and catwalk shows. The companies behind the declaration are Lous Vuiton, Saint Laurent, Christian Dior and Gucci to name just the most famous ones. • obligation coincides with … – zobowiązanie zbiega się w czasie z …
  • valid health certificates – ważne świadectwa zdrowia

Swearing is Good 4U :) . Business / Medicine (dostęp abonamentowy)

Beginners:

vent- uwolnić/ odreagować

We need to vent negative emotions, that’s good for our health – Musimy odreagowywać negatywne emocje, to korzystne dla naszego zdrowia.

Intermediate:

unacceptable- niedopuszczalne

Many people regard swearing as the unacceptable for of behaviour – Wiele osób uważa przeklinanie za niedopuszczalną formę zachowania.

Advanced:

facilitate- wspomagać/ wspierać

Many managers find that swearing facilitates positive emotions in their teams – Wielu menadżerów odkrywa, że przeklinanie korzystnie wpływa na pozytywne emocje w zespole.

Do you swear…? 🙂 Maybe it’s not that bad.

  • swearing facilitates – przeklinanie wspiera / wspomaga
  • profane words – wulgarne słownictwo (formalnie)
  • violent – brutalny
  • rudeness – chamstwo

Research shows the swearing facilitates  team building at work. When using powerful words (but not offensive) people tend to work more effectively and stay closer together. Bad language is not only used to vent  negative emotions, we use the profane words when we express joy and achieve success. Furthermore, swearing makes us less physically violent. The point is however, not to swear too often. If  using bad language is to become or stay efficient, we cannot swear all the time. And of course rudeness , aggression and insult should always be unacceptable (niedopuszczalne).

Intermediate:

risk factor- czynnik ryzyka

Poor diet and inactivity are the risk factors for the heart diseases – Zła dieta oraz brak aktywności fizycznej są czynnikiem ryzyka zachorowań na choroby serca.

Advanced:

life expectancy- przewidywana długość życia

Life expectancy depends on the proper diet, activity and genes – Przewidywana długość życia zależy od odpowiedniej diety, aktywności oraz genów.

Full text:

  • comprehensive study – całościowe / pełne / szerokie badanie
  • nutrition – odżywianie
  • malnutrition – nieodpowiednie odżywianie
  • decisive factor – decydujący czynnik
  • risk factor – czynnik ryzyka

NAGRANIE WYMOWY:

The Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington carried out the most comprehensive study on the nutrition  and malnutrition related diseases. The method designed by the scientists allowed them to examine millions of individuals coming from every country of the world.

The result: poor diet is the decisive factor (decydujący czynnik) in one out of every five deaths in the world. Diet is the second highest risk factor (czynnik ryzyka) of death…just after smoking.

  • life expectancy – przewidywana długość życia
  • directly linked to …  – bezpośrednio związany z …
  • subjected to … – poddany / narażony na …
  • wellbeing – dobre samopoczucie / dobry stan zdrowia

The highest life expectancy : Japan 84 years is directly linked to  the diet. Despite being subjected to  stress and overwork, the Japanese who traditionally eat well and are active…live longest lives and also maintain high comfort of wellbeing  until well into their 80s.

  • perceived as … – postrzegany jako…
  • linked to … – łączony z …
  • inactivity – brak aktywności

In most other developed countries high blood pressure, high body mass index (the most popular measure of obesity), high total cholesterol are perceived as high risk of death factors and… they are all linked to poor diet and inactivity.

  • primarily – przede wszystkim
  • occurrence – występowania
  • premature death – przedwczesna śmierć

All the aforementioned is already well known, however the study offers some contrastive conclusions, primarily: eating red meat is not a risk factor as long as you maintain active lifestyle… and failing to eat nuts and grains is much more dangerous. The studies reveal  the direct correlation between the poor diet and high occurrence of cancer, heart disease and stroke in the examined countries. 72% of premature deaths  in the world result from the developed, rather than contracted, disease… and poor diet is the decisive risk factor here. The study also proves that people are living longer but in poor health.
