  • skupić się na … / skoncentrować się na …
  • cut …– podobnie jak w języku polskim: ciąć / obniżyć”/ zmniejszyć”
  • capacity- ilość / pojemność, tutaj : ilość pasażerów / frequency- częstotliwość
  • route – trasa

to delegate duties/ tasks, etc.- …

– wyznaczać/ przekazywać/ obecnie: delegować obowiązki.

One of the most difficult skills that the manager must acquire is to delegate duties effectively and efficiently to the proper employees- Jedną z najtrudniejszych umiejętności, które menadżer musi nabyć jest skuteczne przekazywanie obowiązków odpowiednim pracownikom.

If you overburden the members of the team by delegating too many tasks to them, they will fail to deal with them successfully- Jeśli przeciążysz pracowników delegowaniem zbyt dużej ilości zadań, nie poradzą sobie z nimi.

Delegating tasks is necessary if the manager doesn’t want to submerge in mundane tasks and lose thevision- Delegowanie obowiązków jest niezbędne, jeśli menadżer nie chce pogrążyć się w przyziemnych zadaniach i stracić wizję.

Three Months on The New Managerial Position: Satisfaction and Apprehension (4 Registered Users)

look back at/ on … – patrzeć wstecz na …/ analizować …

the pace of my career accelerated – tempo mojej kariery przyspieszyło

exposed to … – mający kontakt z … / pracujący nad …..

high assessment and appreciation – wysoka ocena i docenienie

widely recognized- szeroko rozpoznawalny/ także: uznany/ szanowany

When I look back at/ on the first two months of my work in the new institution I can identify numerous points I am satisfied with:

  • the pace of my career accelerated. In my previous job I worked in some routine for many years. There are many new challenges I have to face here constantly, for example: I am exposed to the new methods of preparing the transactions,
  • my communication skills definitely improved, for example: I have direct contact with the headquarters in Paris,
  • I also reckon that I am more confident thanks to high assessment and appreciation of my efforts from the bosses,
  • I am more widely recognized on the market because I have started contributing to the business magazines which are distributed in various companies. I am aware that the content of my articles is widely discussed.

apprehensive about … – zaniepokojony

hazy –  niepewny/ zamglony

undergo merger – przechodzić fuzję

to be let go – zostać zwolnionym

ongoing process – trwający proces

perceive – postrzegać

self esteem – samoocena

prevent from … – zapobiegać/ uniemożliwiać

There are also some things which I am a little apprehensive about. Primarily:

  • the future is hazy. The company is undergoing the merger and probably some employees will have to be let go. Due to the ongoing process some operations and investment decisions are limited. Also the acquisition processes are more conservative than in my previous company.
  • I constantly need to upgrade the quality of my team. I expect my team to be significantly better: there seems to be some contrast between how they perceive themselves and what the reality is. I think that sometimes this self-esteem prevents individual members of the team from development.

Interview with Group of Managers. Business (4 Registered Users)

Moduł językowy opracowany na podstawie świetnych zajęć z bardzo inspirującymi uczniami;)

What do you like about your job?

  • manage people – zarządzać ludźmi (employees- pracownikami)
  • internal/ external teams – wewnętrzne/ zewnętrzne zespoły
  • fixed schedule – stały rozkład dnia
  • participate/ take part in … – brać udział w …
  • appreciate – doceniać/ cenić sobie

I really like managing people. I manage both the internal team of the company and the external teams.

I really enjoy managing my time and that I don’t have to copy the same things every day. I don’t have the fixed schedule.

I really appreciate that I have the opportunity to participate/ take part in interesting events: in the theaters, great restaurants, concert halls and stadiums. These events are not connected directly with my job but they are a nice way to spend free time.

What don’t you like about your job?

  • tiring – męczący
  • responsible – odpowiedzialny
  • manage resources – zarządzać środkami/ kapitałem

It’s a very tiring and responsible job

I manage very high resources and cannot make a mistake.

Are you strict or understanding as a manager?

  • strict – surowy/ wymagający
  • call by name – “być na ty”

I am strict. I don’t call my employees by their names.

Do you have an assistant? How do you organize your work?

  • prioritize – nadawać priortytet/ układać według znaczenia tematu

I have two assistants. One organizes my meetings and the other one does everything else. I meet them every morning and we discuss the schedule of the day. We prioritize tasks- decide about the most important things.

I decide which things I do myself and which I delegate to my assistants.

Assistants are very important to me. Without them I wouldn’t be able to respond to all e-mails, reply to letters, organize the work of the company.

What would you like to do in the next 5 or 10 years?

  • become a member of the board – zostać członkiem zarządu
  • front-line manager – menadżer zajmujący stanowisko wymagający aktywności (wbrew obiegowej opinii nie musi to być menadżer przysłowiowej front-office)
  • self-fulfillment – realiacja własnych ambicji, zamierzeń/ spełnienie
  • slow down – zwolnić tempo
  • freelance – niezależna praca typu “wolny strzelec”
  • render services – świadczyć usługi

A very interesting question. I had an offer some time ago to become the member of the board. But I really like my job, I like being a front-line manager. I also enjoy the time which I spend with my family, the time which I have for sport and other passions, for the self-fulfillment.

I would like to slow down and open my freelance activity. I would like to become an independent expert and render services to big business.

Compose/ consist/ comprise/ include/ involve…Business/Law/Medicine/Technology

Fantastyczne zajęcia z pilotami/ uczestnikami szkolenia Glass Cockpit Aviation ICAO Level 4 stanowią inspirację czysto lingwistycznej próby wytłumaczenia różnic między bardzo bliskoznacznymi pojęciami: compose…/ comprise…/ consist…/ include …/ involve…

Posłużyłem się autentycznymi przykładami wykorzystania ww. słów w języku branż będących treścią ilcs.eu: lotnictwo/ biznes/ prawo/technologia/ medycyna.

consist of …comprise to bardziej formalna forma niż consist, moim zdaniem częściej używana także w znaczeniach abstrakcyjnych:

AVIATION

ATIS comprises  information on all the relevant factors (istotne czynniki) for the take-off and touch-down.

LAW

The American Constitution comprises articles and amendments (poprawki).

BUSINESS

The contract comprises various clauses which should be observed and implemented (przestrzegane i wprowadzane) by the parties.

WARTO ZWRÓĆIĆ UWAGĘ NA RÓŻNICĘ MIĘDZY “COMPOSE” I “COMPRISE”. RÓŻNICA TA POLEGA PRZEDE WSZYSTKIM NA KONSTRUKCJI ZDANIA:

AVIATION

The flaps, the ailerons, the winglets compose the wing- The wing comprises (consists of…) the ailerons, the winglets and the flaps.

LAW

The sentence and the reasons for the judgement  (uzasadnienie) compose the verdict of the court- The verdict of the court comprises (consists of …) the sentence and the reasons for the judgement.

involve odnosi sie do czynności/ procesu/ często tłumaczone jest na język polski jako “polegać na …”

AVIATION

Flying involves a lot of responsibility and concentration, competence acquired (umiejętności nabyte …) through the extensive training, communication skills and the ability to dedicate concentration to the full variety of actions simultaneously (jednocześnie).

BUSINESS

Managing the team is based on the involvement of the group members in the tasks indicated (wskazane) by the leader.

MEDICINE

Effective treatment (skuteczne leczenie) of the patient involves both medication and psychological support.

TECHNOLOGY

Effective and efficient (skuteczne i wydajne) construction of the building involves the performance of building actions in full accord (w pełnej zgodzie, etc.).

Z kolei “include” to najczęściej dosłownie: zawierać i z reguły stosowane jest do składu/ zawartości. powinno być stosowane przed rzeczownikami.

BUSINESS

The set includes the appliance (urządzenie), the charger and the manual.

TECHNOLOGY

The drawing includes (często także “features”) the design and components of the hotel HVAC (Heating/Ventilation/ Air-Conditioning) system.

Informing the Clients in Process of Change. Biznes/ Prawo. (Open Access).

  • key clients are eager to find out- najważniejsi klienci chcą się dowiedzieć
  • provide service to … – zapewnić obsługę/ świadczyć usługi … (komuś)
  • conduct the process- przeprowadzić proces/ działania

During  the process of the change and consolidation, the key clients are eager to find out who will be the head of the department in charge of providing service to them after the transformation has been completed. The duty of the organization is to conduct the process smoothly and without unnecessary delays.

  • change in progress/ in course of change- w trakcie zmian
  • establish/ uphold mutual trust- wypracować/ podtrzymywać wzajemne zaufanie
  • classified information/ confidential information- tajne informacje

Informing the clients about the change in progress is indispensable to establish or uphold mutual trust in course of the process.  Whenever relevant information is no longer classified, the clients should be informed immediately.

  • transparent information- przejrzysta informacja
  • vital- konieczny/ niezbędny
  • rating model- model oceny/ klasyfikacji

The clients want to discuss the strategy, in case of the banks they want to know what the strategy of the new entity will be. This should be understood, because from the client’s point of view transparent information is vital for the cooperation and company plans. They expect from the banks  to keep the financing for a long time. If the rating models and other formulas are not ready, the clients should be openly informed and given some time reference when the work on the new systems will be brought to the end.

Optimization Process/ Conversation Classes Questions and Vocabulary.

The series of inspiring and truly rewarding for me classes on optimization processes in the corporate companies: Vestas (renewable energy sector) and IAMIP (IT development sector).  Here are the questions and vocabulary items which came out during the classes:

Optimization  initial stage/ questions:

  • Where does the idea for the optimization come from? How does it originate in the team? What is the starting point?
  • What are the most common operational areas to improve?
  • Is saving costs the only motivation to optimize operations in the team?
  • To what extent is optimization process a repetitive operation by itself?
  • Contributors may fear optimization processes (the fear of losing a job)? How do you manage to convince them to contribute effectively?
  • How should the managers effectively communicate the need for optimization to the employees?

Optimization initial stage/ vocabulary:

  1. repetitive actions/ operations
  2. data verification
  3. lose competitive edge- stracić przewagę konkurencyjną

What is the best method to organize the brainstorm stage of the project in numerous teams?
  • We all have the tendency to favor our own ideas? How to avoid the conflicts which may result from this?
  • ‘Employees are logical and keep common sense. You can trust them’. Do you agree?

Optimization brainstorm stage/ vocabulary:

  1. desired exit result of the brainstorm stage- pożądane wyniki końcowe etapu burzy mózgów

  6. no hiddden agenda/ nothing in between the lines-  żadnego drugiego dna
  7. conduct the series of brainstorm sessions
  8. sometimes you cannot expect to elicit all ideas from people just at one session

Optimization development and implementation stage/ questions

  • Does optimization have to refer to one team only or do you think optimization stage may refer and upgrade the company inter-departamentally?

Optimization development stage/ vocabulary

  1. delegate people/ attribute tasks to the people following the brainstorm stage
  2. put oneself in the position of …
  3. the thereat of disinvolvment/ disengagement- brak zaangażowania
  4. following the development and prior to implementation: analyst what the return on investment is.

Contradict/ Deliver. Business/ Law (4 Vestas Team)

Poniższy cytat pochodzi z języka medycznego, natomiast prezentowane wyrażenia stosowane są szeroko również w języku biznesu/ technologii/ prawa.

Long after research contradicts common medical practice, patients continue to demand them and doctors continue to deliver. (theatlantic.com)

  1. contradict common medical practice- przeczyć powszechnej praktyce medycznej.
  2. demand- wymagać/ oczekiwać
  3. deliver- tutaj: świadczyć (o usługach)/ zapewniać.

Powyższe wyrażenia w kontekście biznesu:

  • If you demand fair attitude from the employees, you have to show trust – Jeśli wymagasz postawy fair od pracowników, musisz okazać im zaufanie.

mutually satisfying solution – … Business (4 Vestas Team)

– rozwiązanie satysfakcjonujące/ zadowalające dla obu stron

Nagranie wymowy:

After a few hours of hard negotiations, the parties managed to work out the mutually satisfying solution- Po kilku godzinach trudnych negocjacji strony zdołały wypracować obustronnie zadowalające rozwiązanie.

Mutually satisfying solution should be the target of all effective negotiations- Rozwiązanie satysfakcjonujące obie strony powinno być celem wszystkich skutecznych negocjacji.

Oczywiście zamiast ‘satisfying’ możemy stosować inne przymiotniki, typowo: beneficial- korzystny/ profitable-dochodowy, etc.

The true art of the preliminary cooperation between the companies is to work out mutually beneficial solutions which will facilitate operations in the future- Prawdziwą sztuką prowadzenia wstępnej współpracy jest wypracowanie obustronnie korzystnych rozwiązań, które usprawnią/będą wspierać działanie w przyszłości.
