The 24-hectare site, located between two canals in the middle of the city hopes the area will enhance Utrecht’s reputation as a bicycling capital of Europe. The new-build Merwede district of 6,000 homes is expected to be serviced by about 20,000 bicycles Only four dead-end roads of 60 metres in length will protrude into the car-free idyll to allow “logistical” access for petrol vehicles into the district’s outer limits. The roofs of the district’s buildings will be filled with greenery or solar panels, which would cover three hectares if put side to side.
Underground garages alongside the “logistical roads“ will offer 1,800 parking spaces for those who cannot quit their addiction to the car: one car for every three households. The parking spaces will be available for use at a heavy cost and are to remain unassigned to dissuade use. Alongside them will be 300 shared cars for residents’ use. The closest alternative parking will be 3km away.
All project was inspired by smaller-scale designs in Paris and a 600-home settlement in Amsterdam’s Gemeente Waterleiding district.
“We have the highest number of shared cars per capita in the Netherlands. It is amazing to see how the average household is changing its habits. This especially counts for the younger generations.”
Residents must confirm once a year that they do not own a car or otherwise purchase a space in a multistorey car park on the edge of the district. A space was initially provided for every two households, but car ownership has fallen over time, and many of spaces now lie empty.

Meat companies and bakeries introducing vegan sausages, vegan beer, vegan furniture and Marten’s vegan boots… And it turns out to be very profitable for all the aforementioned.
What is certain is that it was good for Greggs: its profits leapt more than 50%, to £40.6m, in the first six months of the year. Queues were forming at Greggs and it was hard to keep up with demand for the snack. It helped to transform the 80-year-old Newcastle-upon-Tyne-based brand into a 21st-century trendy brand. Its shares have doubled in value over the past year. The vegan sausage roll is now one of Greggs’ five bestsellers, but sales of all of its ranges have increased to the point that 35-million-pound dividend was distributed among shareholders in July. The company is looking into vegan versions of its other bestsellers.
One way of looking at this is that veganism is great for business. Another is that vegan sausage rolls are a great marketing tool for pork sausage rolls.
In May, the “fast-casual” chain Leon reported that its sales for 2018 were up 24.5% to £95m. A lot of that is down to offerings such as jack wings, in which jackfruit replaces fried chicken, and the beetroot-based love burger. In January , 46% of Leon’s sales were vegetarian, while 34% were vegan. The Love burger is the chain’s third-most popular item, prominently displayed on menus and posters.
The phenomenon is not confined to food. Dr Martens boots have strolled in and out of fashion many times in the past few decades, but the brand has become a real hit hit with eco-conscious teenagers. The fact that you can buy vegan boots made from polyurethane plastic is in line with company’s core mission: “empowering rebellious self-expression”.
In some supermarkets in selected locations, vegan products account for 30% of sales even though only 1% od British are really vegan…
In the Bristol’s International the food is prepared by a group of Iranians, Russians, Eritreans, Sudanese and Somalis. Jamaicans, Australians. Poles and native English join. The event was organised by the former BBC head of production Kalpna Woolf, who is convinced that food can build bridges as nothing else can. Woolf founded an organisation in June called 91 ways ,which refers to the 91 languages and dialects spoken in Bristol. It is the place for everyone to come and talk, to meet people from different backgrounds and hear their stories.
“Food is a universal language that can bring people together,” Woolf says, and 91ways is encouraging people to share their memories of family dishes and recording them.
“We now have more than 120 recipes from many different communities, such as Susan from Syria, whose full medamas (dried broad beans (fasola) recipe was a Friday ritual when her family gathered round the table after the men had gone to the mosque. Separated by the war, she knows those get-togethers will never happen again.”
In the Peace Cafe’s kitchen, Zahra, an Iranian-born community worker, is assembling a rice dish called adas polo with the help of local chef Freddy Bird. She layers fried onions and potatoes with fragrant rice and lentils (soczewica) spiced with cumin and cinnamon. Normally, the dish would have meat in it but as so many of the day’s clientele are vegetarian. On the other side of the kitchen are piles of featherlight falafel made by Aza, who arrived from Sudan 13 years go.
“She’s telling me I’m doing it all wrong,” says Bird. “Food is a great way of speaking to people,” says Woolf, whose family came from India. “When we share food, we share our national identity, our heritage and our culture. I often quote the story of my father who said: ‘When you eat with someone, you become a part of their memory and they become a part of yours. We have heard stories of love, happiness, family, loss, war, conflict, health, what works in this city and what doesn’t. When people get together over food, they can talk about anything”.
What strikes me is that the cafe is dominated by women. Woolf is not surprised. “Women see the value of what we are doing. In many communities it is still traditional for them to be not only the cook of the family, but more socially active. Many of the women also run small catering companies and this is a vital way for them to earn a bit of money and to work – something they generally struggle with due to language problems or the fact that their qualifications aren’t recognised.”

Neil Nugent, the head chef at Iceland, where he is helping the frozen food specialist tap into new trends:
‘The company hoped to launch more meat-free products in the autumn after finding over-50s were just as keen on the idea as young millenials. It has taken us all by surprise. Customers are saying can you do more. I think the vegan and flexitarian market is the first major food trend that has come out of social media’.

Meditation will give you the fastest results of all of the willpower workouts listed. By meditating you are training the brain to focus and resist. Research shows that after just 2-3 days of practising meditation for 10 minutes, your brain will be able to focus better, you will have more energy, and you will be less stressed.
When testing if willpower could be strengthened, researchers asked a group of participants to work on their posture for a 2-week period. Every time they caught themselves slouching, they were to correct themselves by sitting up straight. To get started, simply correct your posture every time you catch yourself slouching at work or at home. It sounds extremely simple, but it takes willpower to sit up straight. Every time you do, you’re essentially doing “one rep” with your willpower muscle.
The same study also found that those who kept a food diary improved their willpower. Most of us don’t log all of the food we eat, so it takes willpower to keep track of it all. Any similar logging of information will also work, but I recommend a food diary because of all of its benefits. Just keep the diary for 2 weeks, and it will increase your ability to resist temptations!
Using the same methodology as with posture, researchers conducted further studies that tested other corrective actions. One that worked particularly well was to use your opposite hand. Your brain is wired to use your dominant hand, so it takes willpower to use the opposite. To get started, select a chunk of the day to use your opposite hand. It doesn’t need to be any more than an hour in order to get results. And from personal experience, if you aim for more than an hour, you will unnecessarily tire out your willpower muscle.
Another test that the researchers conducted was to change subjects’ natural speech. This includes resisting the urge to use swear words, or to say “hello” instead of “hey”. Again, it takes willpower to consciously go against your instincts. It doesn’t matter how you correct your speech, as long as you change your natural speech habits. To get started, select a chunk of the day to practise and choose the words you will change, i.e. stop using contractions:“do not” instead of “don’t”, etc. during work hours and it worked very well. Like all exercises listed above, doing this for just 2 weeks can vastly improve your willpower!
Creating self-imposed deadlines you can work your willpower in the same way. To get started, simply pick a task on your to-do list that you may have been putting off. Set a deadline to accomplish it, and make sure you adhere to it. The participants who followed this process for 2 weeks not only got their old to-dos done, but also improved their diets, exercised more, and cut back on cigarettes and alcohol.
In the same way most of us don’t track the food that we eat, many of us don’t track our spending either. Even if you don’t cut back on spending – which would also be a willpower workout – researchers found that simply keeping track of of where your money went will improve your willpower.
Resisting a craving will be hard. Carry something small but tempting with you. It doesn’t need to be for an entire day, but for long enough that you will be truly tempted. By consistently saying “no”, you will increase your ability to resist other temptations.
A final exercise is to simply be more mindful of your decisions throughout the day. We are often so lost in thought, that our actions become automatic. Taking time to think about why you are making your daily decisions will increase your ability to focus and resist temptations.
